"I love you, but ... " is not an expression of love. Instead it is a demand couched in loving terms.
If you love somebody, you love them unconditionally. If you want something of them, diplomatically ask it and sincerely thank them for their consideration.
These are acts of love expressed from the heart and not of the ego.
