You Are Your Children's Role Model

It is very common for people to call rock stars, actors, sports figures and other celebrities "role models" and look to them to somehow establish the value system for their children. Please don't slip into that silliness. You are the role model for your children.

It is you who builds their character and shows them how to love and be loved and how to respect and treat their spouse and their children. It is you who provides them with the encouragement to become the best person they can be. It is you who sits up at night with them when they are sick, it is you who helps them with their homework and it is you who offers a hug and a smile when it is most needed.

It is you who keeps a roof over their heads and you who puts food on the table and clothes on their backs. It is you who is there to listen when they most need someone to listen and it is you who keeps them humble while providing them with a sense of self-esteem and self-worth.

No-one else can fill this role. Rock stars, actors, sports figures and other celebrities as you think you know them, are largely the creation of public relations firms working closely with the media. In fact, you have no idea who these people really are and in many cases, they have no idea who they are either, for they are on life's journey with the rest of us, and like us, are far from perfect and are involved in self-exploration.

To be a role model to your children, you don't have to be perfect. Just be there with all the love, understanding, kindness and forgiveness you can muster. That is what makes you a real role model and one that helps to uplift mankind.
