Our self-esteem is vital to us, as it allows us to feel good about ourselves and to see others in a more positive way.
To be critical of someone else could diminish that person's sense of self-esteem and it speaks badly of the critic. For what can be gained by such an attack? And who made the critic judge and jury? If one believes change is necessary for another, the best way to address it is to start with one's self, to understand if that is where the change should really be.
For we all want others to change to comply with our wishes, often blind to our own shortcomings. And sometimes the changes we wish for another, such as in their lifestyle, or earning capacity, or theIr career, simply doesn't comply with who they are.
Each of us has value and it takes different forms from one person to the next. It is better to respect our differences rather than to try to impose our will upon others. If change really is necessary, help them to see that in themselves through gentle encouragement, all the while building upon their self-esteem.
It is through our encouragement and not our criticism that we express our love, as we support the building of self-esteem in others, not tear it down.
