The Pleasure Of Being With Gladys, An 86 Year Old Actress

While on a walk along the scenic Vancouver harbor, I met lovely 86 year old Gladys, who was beautifully dressed in orange slacks, an off white top and she was wearing a bright scarf that contained all the colors of a rainbow. She used a walker to help keep her balance and her smile was delightful and her personality was engaging.

Gladys is the mother of two adult daughters, five adult granddaughters and seven great grandchildren. Twenty six years ago, Gladys retired from a career in hospital administration, determined to have some fun. That fun came in a way she never imagined.

One day a friend of her daughter's called to say she was signing up as an extra for a movie being filmed the next day and would sign Gladys up as well. At first Gladys objected, but when the two of them were selected, Gladys went, had a good time and got a paycheck.

After that Gladys was hooked and eventually got an agent for background work and one for acting. She said acting is a tough business for consistent work can be hard to get but as a retiree she is not dependent on the work and does not worry about paying her bills from it.

As a result, Gladys has fun occupying her time being in movies and commercials and had just finished a commercial and gotten a nice check. She is a lively lady with a bundle of personality and it was a joy to bask in her energy and her warmth. While she finds so much joy in being in movies and commericals, it is theater that is her real love and she attends regularly and participates in community theater as well.

Between the love for her family, the love of theater and the joy of being in movies and commercials, Gladys lives a wonderful, purposeful life, and she shares her happiness with all those around her. On that day, I thankfully was one of those people around her.
