When someone comes to you to share their feelings about the loss of a loved one, the end of a romance, a horrible disease their doctor has confirmed, or the loss of a job, a home or some other matter of great meaning to them, the greatest gift you can give to them at that time is your focused, compassionate listening.
They are not necessarily seeking your advice. But they respect and rely upon you enough to pour out their heartfelt feelings to you. At least in part through you, they will get through this difficult time and will know that when they needed you so very much, you were there for them.
