Emotionally Distant

Many women are nurturers and readily express their feelings of love. But many of us men are emotionally distant because we reflect the lack of loving expression shown to us by our fathers.

It is viewed as unmanly for us to hug and kiss our children, particularly our sons and to tell them we love them, as we set the direction for the next generation of young men.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Anne and I have three sons and from the time they were babies, I hugged and kissed them and told them I loved them.

Today I'm 69 years of age and they are 47, 44 and 39 and I still hug and kiss them and tell them I love them, and I tell them that I'm proud of them.

Each son in turn has a wife and two children, collectively five sons and one daughter. And each son expresses his love for his children as I have for them.

If you are a man, there is no upside to withholding hugs and kisses and words of love, and by doing so you are only perpetuating coldness and emotional distance.

Don't let another day pass without your hugs and kisses and your words of love and encouragement. It will make you a better person as it gives your children what they need and it will set a far better direction for the next generation.
