A Visit To The Toy Store

One of the great joys of being a grandparent is to take our grandchildren to a toy store to choose any toy his or her little heart desires.

This happened Sunday (7/22/12) when Anne and I met our daughter-in-law Maria at a local shopping mall where our 4-year-old granddaughter Carina was having her hair cut. During her haircut, I took her big brother, 7-year-old Cameron to a toy store, where he chose two Lego toys for himself, and two dolls for Carina.

Afterward, we all had lunch together at Ruby's Diner, and then we said goodbye to Maria and brought the kids to our home, where they played with their new toys and they played as well on the swing set in our backyard.

We also filled them up with chocolate covered vanilla ice cream pieces called Dibs, which they love, and we gave them plenty of chocolate milk and lemonade, all of which we keep on hand knowing little grandchildren enjoy these things very much.

One of the nicest moments came while Cameron and I were kicking some small soccer style balls around in the yard. Carina joined us for a time. And then she stepped away from that game as she picked some flowers for Anne, clutching them softly in her little fingers, as she and Anne put them in two small flat vases filled with water.

When it came time for us to take the children home, they were having so much fun, they did not want to leave, so we kept them for about an hour longer. But after we returned them to their parents and came home, I quietly looked at our kitchen table where those two vases set, at the beautiful flower arrangements in red, pink, dark blue and white and it touched my heart, as I pictured the tiny little girl who picked them from our garden.
