A Birthday Party For A Tiny Girl Turning 4

Last night, Anne and I attended a birthday party for our grandchild Carina, who is turning 4. And what a great party it was. There were 85 people, 40 of whom were small children and there was happiness everywhere as the joyful children played with the toys and with each other.

Tiny Carina was the belle of the ball, in her flashy purple dress, with pink flowers and a pink princess crown resting proudly on top of her head. Even her fingernails were pink. It was a wonderful occasion and her aunts Teresa and Anna and uncles Joseph and Martin and her other grandmother Mary had driven 5 1/2 hours from Northern California to help her celebrate, her aunt Teresa even briefly setting aside her accounting service during a busy tax season to join everyone.

Carina's birthday cake had 4 pink candles atop a white sugary frosting and pictures of Disney princesses including Snow White, Cinderella and Rapunzel. The candles were blown out by Carina, her big brother Cameron, 6 years old and by any other child close enough to participate, as "Happy Birthday" was energetically sung more or less on tune.

As grandparents, we know how special these moments are, and while the events don't last long, the memories last a lifetime, as do the pictures people take, and the joy they recall in their hearts. For the entire celebration was done as an expression of love for little bitty Carina, a pint-sized adorable tot.
